Hungerford Arcade: A Perfect Match

In a place like Hungerford Arcade, you often don't know what you want until you see it.  But when you see it, you have to have it!  This is exactly what happened when Alan Montague-Dennis came in with his two children, Grace and Freddie.

Alan came in to buy a top hat.  He knew exactly what he wanted and had already chosen it.  So that was quite straightforward.  He did pay part of the balance with two bottles of Bollinger, but that's a different story altogether!

While he was trying his hat on and chatting to the desk staff, Grace and Freddie were exploring the shop.  After looking at a few bits and pieces and finding nothing that they particularly wanted, they were ready to go.  But just as they were leaving, they spotted the perfect item.  It was a china model of a whippet with a light brindle coat.  The spitting image of their own dog, Vera.  Dad took a bit of convincing, but he eventually caved as the kids assured him it was a once in a lifetime find.  And when we saw the two together, we all agreed that the match was perfect!

Hungerford Arcade Penny Farthing for Edward

When 3 year old Edward came to Hungerford Arcade with his father, he had no idea what surprise awaited him when he was met by Arcade co-owner, Adrian Gilmour.

Edward fell in love with a framed penny farthing bicycle made up from an old English penny and a farthing. Adrian saw his little face light up and decided to make a presentation of it to Edward.  As you can see from the photograph, Edward was not going to let go of it.

Edward and his father returned to the Arcade and told us that he now has a baby brother. We send his mother, Kelly and baby Alexander our very best wishes and hope to see them all in the near future.

Hungerford Arcade's Postcard Valuation Day

Postcards, stamps, first day covers and all other types of ephemera are welcome at our valuation day here at the Arcade tomorrow.

Our resident postcard dealer, Jonathan Edwards, will be here all day perusing piles of pamphlets, searching stacks of stamps and craving collections of cards.  If it's made of paper, Jonathan wants to see it!

To give you a taste of the kind of things Jonathan would be able to value for you, have a look at these somewhat different greetings cards, probably from around the time of the First World War.  I'll be bringing these down myself, to see what he has to say about them.

Hungerford Arcade Mexico

L-R: Angel Zamora, Rita, Indira Castillo &
Philippa
Hungerford Arcade gives a very warm welcome to all our visitors both home and abroad.  When people come to visit us who live across the other side of the world, in Europe or over the pond either because someone back home has told them that they must visit the Arcade, or they receive our Newsletter, go onto our website and read our blogs, something -draws them.  Once they are here, the excitement sets in and many come back again and again.

We had a lovely couple visit us from Mexico, Angel Zamora and Indira Castillo. Angel is a motion graphics specialist and Indira is a graphics stills specialist. Angel has been to the Arcade before and he told Indira that this will be a must visit when they arrive. Indira was thrilled and mesmerised by the Arcade and understood why Angel wanted her to come. She loved it.  They took many things back home with them and will always remember their visit.

Hungerford Arcade: Hungerford Celebrates Birth of Baby Princess

Rod Desmeules (blue trousers) holding court
The Union flags were flying high in Hungerford today as the town celebrated the announcement that the Duchess of Cambridge had given birth to a beautiful baby daughter. Rod Desmeules, a great friend of Hungerford and of the Arcade, was up bright and early putting the Union flags up thoughout the town in celebration of the Royal birth of the new baby Princess.  Rod was holding court to a group of visitors to the town, briefing them about the news which they may not have heard due to travelling.  There was great excitement and much talk of celebrating.

Hungerford was buzzing all day with excitement. people spoke of nothing else - wonderful.
